How to understand e-commerce behavior using Google Tag Manager
Our work : Implementation of Google Tag Manager (GTM) and configuration of e-commerce tracking tags to collect accurate data on user behavior, optimize the sales funnel, and increase conversions.
Context : Our client, a Swiss e-shop specializing in natural cosmetics, was having difficulty understanding the behavior of its online visitors. Without precise data on user interactions (product views, items added to cart, abandoned carts, etc.), it was impossible to identify pain points in the sales funnel or optimize marketing campaigns.
Goal : To implement a robust tracking solution (Google Tag Manager) for:
- Collect accurate data on the customer journey.
- Optimize the user experience.
- Increase conversion rate and reduce cost per acquisition.
01
Specific Challenges and Needs
Lack of data and lack of centralized monitoring
Our client, an online store for natural cosmetics, was experiencing major difficulties in analyzing the journey of its visitors.
Without accurate interaction data (product views, cart additions, abandonments), it was impossible to identify friction points or optimize marketing campaigns effectively.
Challenges
- Lack of a customer loyalty strategy
- Lack of time
- Lack of technical knowledge
- Limited budget
Easy tracking of user interactions
The company needed a solution that would allow it to track user interactions (page views, additions to cart, purchases) without constantly relying on its technical team to implement tracking codes.
Such autonomy was essential to quickly optimize its sales funnel.
Needs
- User interaction tracking
- Technical autonomy
- Rapid sales funnel optimization

Strategy and implementation
Winter 2021
Step 1 – Complete audit of the e-shop
- Analysis of existing tools (Google Analytics 4, Google Ads)
- Identification of gaps in monitoring
- Identifying opportunities to improve data collection and user experience
January 2022
Step 2 – Centralizing tag management
- Implementation of Google Tag Manager (GTM)
- Configuring the basic tags
- Configuring e-commerce tags
- Preparing the ground for more granular monitoring
February 2022
Step 3 – Facilitating performance monitoring
- In GA4, dedicated dashboards are created to track key interactions: product views, additions to cart, removals from cart, order initiations and purchases.
- Integration with Google Ads, so that algorithms can more precisely target the desired audience.
Spring 2022
Step 4 – Continuous Optimization
- Weekly data analysis to identify opportunities for improvement
- Adjusting tags, triggers, and landing pages
- A/B testing on product pages to determine best practices

Results
Key Performances
Implementing Google Tag Manager gave our client complete visibility into user behavior. This data allowed them to identify pain points and optimize their customer journey, resulting in an 18% increase in conversions in just three months.
The information collected also made it possible to adjust marketing campaigns, thus reducing the cost per acquisition by 22% after 12 months while improving the relevance of the messages.
Results
- Sales increased by 18%
- Acquisition cost reduced by 22%
- Optimized customer journey
Qualitative impact
With a deep understanding of user behavior, our client was able to identify the most abandoned pages and the most viewed products. These insights enabled targeted adjustments, thus improving the user experience and the overall performance of their website.
Marketing campaigns, now based on accurate data, are more effective and better targeted, reducing budget waste.
Now, our client :
- Better understands its users
- Engage its users more effectively
- Generates more sales (with the same advertising budget) than in the past
04
Conclusion and future prospects
Summary :
Implementing Google Tag Manager transformed our client’s ability to collect and analyze user data. Through a data-driven approach, the online store was able to optimize its sales funnel, increase conversions by 18%, and reduce its cost per acquisition by 22%.
Future prospects :
Building on these successes, our client already wishes to extend the use of GTM to its other sites and/or e-shops, which will certainly also benefit from optimized configuration compared to basic configuration.
Conclusion
- Using GTM allows for the centralization of data collection and analysis
- Combined with a data visualization tool (here GA4), GTM also accelerates pattern detection and data-driven decision-making.
- A personalized approach that takes into account the specific characteristics of an e-shop and its users is more effective than a global configuration, which often remains basic.
